A. PURPOSE

This program is established in memory of J.W.T Youngs, the founding chair of the Mathematics Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz. The purpose of this development program is to produce a flow of talented scholar/teachers of mathematics through the Mathematics Department.

B. REQUIREMENTS

This program is for scholars at the postdoctoral level who are recruited following the usual campus procedures of a nationwide of international search. The positions will be widely advertised so as to create a strong pool of applicants. Advertisements will be placed, at least, in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society, in Employment Information in the Mathematical Sciences, and the bulletin of the Association for Women in Mathematics. All candidates will be required to demonstrate excellence in research and to show potential as an excellent teacher. Appointees will have at least one faculty sponsor with whom the apointee would likely engage in collaborative research. The department will not be obligated to make as many offers for these positions in any given year as there are openings, and will not make an offer unless there is a sufficient number of highly qualified candidates.

The term and conditions of employment of the Visiting Assistant Professor title shall apply except appointees will carry the teaching load of a regular Assistant Professor and may hold the title for a maximum of three years. Appointees are expected to pursue research and to perform some department service.

D. TEACHING

Each fellow will be assigned at least one graduate or advanced undergraduate course in fellow's specialty each year. Before the beginning of the academic year the fellows will meet with the Vice-chair for Instruction and the Undergraduate Program, who will explain our undergraduate and graduate programs and our narrative evaluation system, discuss the particular courses assigned, and give general advice on teaching techniques. The Vice-chair will visit the classes of the fellows to monitor their teaching effectiveness and to offer advice if appropriate.

E. SALARY

Normally salaries will be at the beginning Assistant Professor level (Step I or II).

F. ACADEMIC SENATE

Membership in the Academic Senate is not acquired by these appointments.

G. REVIEW

The Chair of Mathematics and the Dean of the Division of Natural Sciences will review the performance of each fellow as soon after the completion of the first year of appointment as possible. This review will include comments from the Vice-chair and faculty sponsor. The extension of a third year is dependent on positive review of teaching and research during the second year; otherwise the second year will be considered terminal.

H. PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

  • a. the teaching effectiveness of the appointees
  • b. their contribution to the Department's research efforts
  • c. interaction with regular faculty and graduate students
  • d. data on placement of fellows after leaving UCSC
