Action Code Action Name Definition
ADL Additional employment This code should be used when a person is given an additional appointment in the same academic title. For example, if a post-6-year Lecturer is given an additional course to teach on top of the courseload assigned as their 3 year commitment, this code should be used for the second appointment.
AP Appointment An appointment occurs when a person is newly employed in a different academic title series within the University, or when they are re-hired to the same academic title with a break in service or when they are re-hired to a different academic title series. Do not use when faculty is transferred to new department
BMP 10th Qtr Bump, U18 Upon reappointment to a fourth year of service within the same department, the University shall grant a salary increase of at least one step to any NSF who has not received a prior within-range salary increase.
CF Carry forward This code is used to record the creation of a record for an on-going appointment for the new academic year. Creation of the Carry Forward record allows for accrual of service and makes reporting easier.
CH% Change percent time  
CHTC Change title code  
CL Closed Indicates a review that could not be completed and has been closed as incomplete. Code active as of 12/18/17.
cut Salary cut This code was used to record the temporary cuts applied to academic salaries as a result of the state budget crisis in 1993-94.
DF No longer used Previously, this code was used to record the approval of a request to defer an on-call review. Retired as of 6/30/14.
DF1 Deferral, 1-year Approved one-year deferral for an on-call review. Code active as of 12/18/17.
DF2 Deferral, 2-year Approved two-year deferral for an on-call review. Code active as of 12/18/17.
DFA Deferral, Automatic Unapproved one year deferral that automatically goes into effect when the review submission deadline has been missed by candidate. Code active as of 7/1/14.
DFR No longer used Previously, this code was used to indicate a requested and approved deferral. Retired as of 12/18/17; replaced by DF1 and DF2.
DN Denial This code should be used when a decision has been made, as the result of a review, to deny any advancement in rank, step or salary.
EX Extend pending review Use this code to extend an appointment pending completion of a review for reappointment. For example, if a reappointment review for an Assistant Professor is not completed before the current appointment ends and the EVC has approved extension of the current appointment pending completion of the review, this code should be used.
IAP Initial appointment This code should be used for a person's first appointment in a non-student academic title on the Santa Cruz campus.
LO Involuntary term of appt Involuntary termination of appointment due to layoff
MA Mandatory review This code should be used to record the completion of a mandatory review when advancement has not been considered.
MD Midcareer appraisal only Use this code only in the rare situation that the midcareer appraisal is conducted separately from any reappointment or advancement action. If any reappointment and/or advancement is involved, the code corresponding to those actions should be used (e.g. REMI)
MI Merit increase For academic appointees who are on a rank/step system, a merit increase is an advancement in salary and step (or to an above-scale salary) without a change in title or rank. For appointees who are paid on a salary range, a merit increase is an advancement in salary rate, without a change in rank or title. Use this code when the merit increase is NOT coincident with a reappointment. For example, an advancement from Associate Professor, Step 2 to Step 3 would be a merit increase only.
MP Midpoint reappt, U-18 A thorough reappointment (non-short form) review made at some "mid-point" during the first six years of service. This full review is normally conducted within the candidate's 7th-12th quarter reappointment range, at the department or dean's discretion, but no later than the twelfth quarter.
PR Promotion A promotion is an advancement from one rank to a higher rank within the same academic title series.
RA Range adjustment This code is used to record a range/parity adjustment to academic salaries.
RE Reappointment only The term reappointment is used for the renewal of an appointment immediately following the ending of the previous appointment in the same title. Use this code when the reappointment is NOT coincident with a merit or salary increase.
REC Recall Use to record a recall appointment
REG Regularization "Regularization" is the transfer from an Acting appointment to a regular appointment at regular-scale salary. This code should be used to record the regularization of an Acting appointment.
REMI Reappt with merit increase Use this code when an academic appointee who is on a rank/step system receives a reappointment coincident with an advancement in salary rate and step (or to an above-scale salary) without a change in title or rank. For example, if an Assistant Professor moves from Step 3 to Step 4, this code should be used. Use this code when appointees who are paid on a salary range receive a reappointment coincident with an advancement in salary rate, without a change in rank or title. For example, if a Unit 18 Lecturer receives a merit increase coincident with a reappointment, use this code.
RESI Reappt with salary increase Use this code when an academic appointee on a rank/step system is given a reappointment coincident with an increase in salary with no change in rank or step. For example, if an Assistant Professor moves from Step 3 to Step 3 off-scale, this code should be used.
REX REX  
RF Range forward A range forward record is used to create a record effective with the annual range adjustment for appointees whose salaries are not subject to range adjustment. The idea is for all appointees to have a record effective on the range adjustment date so that the "current flag" can operate cleanly to locate all current employees.
RIT Redux in time involuntary Involuntary reduction in time due to layoff
SI Salary increase Use this code when an academic appointee on a rank/step system is given an increase in salary with no change in rank or step. For some title series, a salary increase may be awarded in lieu of a merit increase, resulting in an off-scale salary. APM 620 lists the titles which may have off-scale salaries. Use this code only for those title series. Use this code only when the salary increase is NOT coincident with a reappointment.
TERM Terminal appointment An appointment made with the specific intent of no further reappointment after the end date. This action code is used to record the beginning of a period of notice.
TRANS LR Appointment transfer Transfer of LR FTE appointment between departments

ac Acceleration An acceleration takes place when an appointee advances to a rank or step before serving the normal period of time. University policy establishes normal periods of service for each title series. For example, if an Assistant Professor advances from Step 2 to Step 4, this code should be used.
gr Greater than normal (GTN) A greater than normal advancement takes place when an advancement at the normal time, but receives more than a normal advancement in salary. For example, if an Assistant Professor advances from Step 2 to Step 3 off-scale, this code should be used.
a1 accel+one-third This code is used for an acceleration with an additional off-scale salary component equivalent to one-third-step, as provided for in the campus' special salary practice program. (established in 2008-09; updated in 2017-18)
g1 GTN+one-third This code is used for a merit with a greater-than-normal off-scale salary component equivalent to one-third-step, as provided for in the campus' special salary practice program. (established in 2008-09; updated in 2017-18)
g2 GTN+two-thirds This code is used for a merit with a greater-than-normal off-scale salary component equivalent to two-thirds-step, as provided for in the campus' special salary practice program. (established in 2008-09; updated in 2017-18)
ix06 Unit 18, 6% increase (Unit 18 titles only) Use this code to record an advancement with 6% salary increase.
ix09 Unit 18, 9% increase (Unit 18 titles only) Use this code to record an advancement with 9% salary increase.
ix12 Unit 18, 12% increase (Unit 18 titles only) Use this code to record an advancement with 12% salary increase.
ix15 Unit 18, 15% increase (Unit 18 titles only) Use this code to record an advancement with 15% salary increase.
u1 No longer used Previously, this code was used to record an advancement of one increment on the Unit 18 standard table of pay rates.
u2 No longer used Previously, this code was used to record an advancement of two increments on the Unit 18 standard table of pay rates.
u3 No longer used Previously, this code was used to record an advancement of three increments on the Unit 18 standard table of pay rates.

Off/Above Scale

These codes indicate whether a salary has an off- or above-scale component:

Code Name Description
o Off-Scale The term for an academic appointee full-time salary rate that does not match the salary stated for the given title, rank and step in the published salary scales and is not above the highest published salary for that title series.
A Above Scale   The term for an academic appointee full-time salary rate that exceeds the maximum salary designated for the title series in the published salary scales.
