Subject: Pathways To Retirement Program Launched
To: Senate Faculty

I’m pleased to announce the launch of the Pathways to Retirement program for Senate faculty. Details about the program are available at https://apo.ucsc.edu/retirement. Don Brenneis, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, has agreed to serve as the inaugural Pathways to Retirement Faculty Liaison. Don’s deep campus experience in multiple roles, including as a faculty member, department chair, Senate chair, and a recent retiree, make him well suited to help us launch this program.

The Pathways to Retirement Program is meant to smooth out the transition to emerita/emeritus/emer. status for faculty, while providing departments with more reliable succession planning. Pathway Agreements are binding agreements that may include pre-retirement and post-retirement incentives in exchange for a commitment to retire on a specific date. These agreements are negotiated with the department chair and the dean.

This program is part of the campus commitment to supporting faculty in shaping their ongoing engagement with their departments and the broader scholarly community.

Don is eager as faculty retirement liaison to be available for consultation and conversation about how faculty retirement goals might most effectively be pursued, as well as to answer questions about retirement and life as emeriti faculty. He is available for confidential conversations (via phone or Zoom) with senate faculty thinking about retirement. Contact him at brenneis@ucsc.edu
