UCSC:APO rev 08/22

Unit 18 faculty are not permitted to volunteer to perform without pay individual studies, administrative duties, or service responsibilities, or other duties that are eligible for compensation in accordance with Article 24.  All assignments must be approved in writing by the appointing authority in order to be eligible for compensation.

All 5-unit courses sponsored by the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences (“PBSci”) equal one Instructional Workload Credit (IWC), except as noted below.  Courses of less than 5-units – if not noted below – are valued at the proportionate IWC value.

Department and Course/duties IWC
All PBSci Departments 99, 193, 195, 198, 199 1.20 IWC
All PBSci Departments 297, 299, 301 0.15
All PBSci Departments 292*, 294 0.20
All PBSci Departments 42, 192, 296 0.50
All PBSci Departments – Academic and/or administrative related responsibilities that amount to an average of 5 hours per week which may include but are not limited to:  coordination of lab 1.00/year sections and TA efforts for lab courses, coordinate lab staff and instructional effort for lab courses, compilation of readers or other course materials 1/3 IWC

*Chem 292 has an IWC of 0.40

Notes:  In the case of split lecture/lab courses (i.e., Biol 130/130L), the lecture portion of the course is assigned 1 IWC and the lab portion of the course is assigned the remaining portion of the IWC.  (Example: Bio 130/130L is assigned a 1.5 IWC.  If the lecture and lab are taught by two different instructors, the instructor teaching the lecture is assigned 1 IWC and the instructor teaching the lab is assigned 0.5 IWC).
