Clarification Regarding the Recent Delegations of Authority for Greater-than-normal Merits of 5% or Less and Normal Merits at the Indefinite Steps of the Professor Rank

January 17, 2008

By David S. Kliger, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

Dear Colleagues:

On October 26, 2007. I delegated to the Deans, on a one year trial basis, the authority to approve those greater-than-normal merit increases where the proposed increase in the candidate's off-scale salary increment did not exceed 5% of their current salary.

A number of divsions requested clarification as to whether the term "candidate" refers solely to the Professor series, or includes the equivalent series of Professional Researcher and Astronomer. For the limited purposes of delegation, the term "candidate" includes the series of the Professor, Professional Researcher and Astonomer.

At the same time, I also delegated to the Deans the authority for normal merits at the indefinite steps of Professor Rank. To be consistent, this delegation also includes the authority for nomal merits at the indefinite steps of the equivalent series of Professional Researcher and Astronomer.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Elizabeth Dane in Academic Human Resources, ext. 9-3118, or lizdane@ucsc.edu.

Sincerely,

David S. Kliger

Executive Vice Chancellor
