Re: 2019-20 Postdoctoral Scholars Academic Salary Scale Issuance
Dear Colleagues:
The salary scale for Postdoctoral Scholars (postdocs) has been increased in accordance with Article 4, Compensation, of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of California and the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. The rates have been increased based on the fiscal year 2020 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Ruth L. Kirchstein National Research Service Award stipend levels. The NIH announcement is found online at https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-20-070.html.
Effective March 1, 2020, the minimum salary/stipend rates for UC postdocs will increase in accordance with the NIH scale, with experience level 0 matching experience level 2 on the NIH scale; experience level 1 matching experience level 3; and so on at each experience level up through the maximum (by exception) experience level 5, which matches experience level 7 on the NIH scale.
These new minimum salary rates are to be applied to an individual postdoc’s salary on the effective date (on or after March 1, 2020) of their appointment, reappointment, or anniversary date for those postdocs with multiple year appointments. For individuals with Kirschstein Fellowships, the stipend will be increased on the effective date established in their revised NIH Award Notice.
The campus Postdoctoral Scholar Salary/Stipend Scale has been updated and is available online on the Academic Personnel Office web site (Academic Salary Scales). Please bring this revised scale to the attention of appropriate individuals in your units, including PIs, research accountants, and payroll coordinators. Questions may be directed to apo@ucsc.edu.
