Continuation of Delegation of Authority for Greater-than-normal Merits

July 15, 2008

By David S. Kliger, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

Dear Colleagues:

On a pilot basis for the 2007-2008 academic year, I delegated to the deans the authority to approve those greater-than-normal merit increases where the proposed increase in the candidate’s off-scale salary increment did not exceed 5% of their current salary. This delegation applied to the series of Professor, Professional Researcher and Astronomer.

Per our recent discussion at the Deans Advisory Council meeting, this delegation was of great use to the divisions. Therefore, this delegation of authority is hereby continued indefinitely. This authority may not be further redelegated. I continue to retain authority for all proposed increases in the amount of a candidate’s off-scale increment which exceed 5% of their current salary. In addition, I also retain authority for those initial exceptions for an off-scale salary in excess of the campus off-scale salary limits.

The Delegation of Authority Chart, contained in the Campus Academic Personnel Manual (CAPM), has been updated to reflect this delegation.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Elizabeth Dane in the Academic Personnel Office, ext. 9-3118, or at lizdane@ucsc.edu

Sincerely,

David S. Kliger

Campus Provost and

Executive Vice Chancellor
