Re: 2016-17 Postdoctoral Scholars Academic Salary Scale Issuance

Dear Colleagues:

The salary scale for Postdoctoral Scholars (postdocs) has been increased in accordance with Article 4, Compensation, of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of California and the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. The rates have been increased based on the projected fiscal year 2017 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Ruth L. Kirchstein National Research Service Award stipend levels. The projected new stipend levels were set by the NIH to reflect recognition of the significant contributions of postdoctoral researchers and to align with the spirit of the U.S. Department of Labor’s recently issued revisions to the rules on paid overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The NIH announcement is found online at https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-16-134.html.

For UC postdocs, effective December 1, 2016, the minimum salary/stipend rate for experience level 0 will match experience level 2 on the NIH projected scale; experience level 1 will match experience level 3; and so on at each experience level up through the maximum (by exception) experience level 5, which will match experience level 7 on the NIH projected scale.

As a result, all UC postdocs will have their salaries/stipends increased to the new annual salary rate that corresponds to their existing experience level on December 1, 2016. However, postdocs with salary/stipend amounts already at or above the new minimum salary experience level rates will not receive an increase until their reappointment date, or their appointment anniversary date for those postdocs with multiple-year appointments. For individuals with Kirschstein Fellowships, the stipend will be increased on the effective date established in their revised NIH Award Notice.

The campus Postdoctoral Scholar Salary/Stipend Scale has been updated and is available online on the Academic Personnel Office web site (Academic Salary Scales). Please bring this revised scale to the attention of appropriate individuals in your units, including PIs, research accountants, and payroll coordinators. Questions may be directed to Susan Fellows (sfellows@ucsc.edu).
