Re: 2019-20 Professorial Salary Program Details

Dear Colleagues:

I write to confirm this year’s academic salary program for the ladder-rank professor series, teaching professor (lecturers with security of employment) series, astronomers, acting professors, and adjunct professors, effective October 1, 2019. Due to the October 1 effective date, faculty summer salary for 2019 is not affected by these increases.

As I wrote in my July 18 announcement, the 2019-20 UC salary program consists of a general range adjustment of three percent for all senate and nonrepresented academic salary scales.

There is also a separate multi-year program initiated last year by President Napolitano, which focuses on rebuilding competitive salaries for our ladder-rank faculty and reinforcing the unique, peer-reviewed salary structure of the University of California. That presidential program is adding one percent to professorial scales, also effective October 1. This targeted adjustment also applies to teaching professors (LSOE series); ladder-rank-equivalent title series (acting professor, astronomer); and series with scales tied by policy to the ladder rank scale (adjunct professor).

Consistent with past campus practice, there will be no across-the-board adjustment to off-scale salary components. Percentage-based off-scale adjustments tend to exacerbate salary compression and inversion. This practice preserves campus resources for use in targeted cases of equity and retention.

For ladder-rank faculty, all performance-based merits and promotions approved for July 1, 2019 will continue to be fully funded.

This year’s October 1 effective date leaves nine months over which to realize annualized percentage increases for these scales, resulting in an effective increase of approximately 5.3 percent. The exact percentages vary due to rounding and smoothing between steps. The adjustment will be likewise be applied to above-scale appointees per established campus practice: the portion of the salary up to the campus salary limit will be adjusted to the new limit.

This salary program applies to all appointees in relevant titles with appointments active on or after October 1, 2019, unless stipulated otherwise in appointment or retention agreements.

Negotiated compensation agreements for recalled retirees, by-agreement appointees, and visitors are subject to the discretion of the hiring authority, and therefore not included in the academic salary program.

Other academic salary scale changes effective October 1 are outlined in the recent October 2019 Salary Scales issuance memo from AVP McClintock.
